‘Atypical’ is beautiful. ‘
Abnormal’ challenges us to re-think normal.
My work aims to use the voice to invite us all to re-think what’s ‘beautiful’ and what’s ‘ugly’ in the voice, what’s ‘normal’ and what’s ‘noisy’ - and by extension, which sounds, made by whom, matter, and which bodies get to take up the space of celebration that is the stage.
The work does this in interaction with the audience.
From the beautiful, resonant sounds of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, to the sounds of a shy passerby who thinks they ‘can’t sing’ or are a ‘bad speaker’ - my work aims to celebrate the very thing that makes them unusual: their unique difference, and their unruly body.
